.303 calibre Sporting ex-service rifle from Churchill (Gun makers) Ltd. 32 Orange Street, London. NW C2.
Built on an original BSA Lee Enfield .303 British military SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield). Date stamp of 1918 to the action strap. Fitted with the original rear volley open sights graduated from 200 to 2000 yards. The gun is in generally very tidy order throughout. A number of well-known gun makers made use of ex or surplus military actions from British as well as any other forces around the world so these used to be pretty common for a long time as a budget end rifle.
None drill scope bases are readily available for these actions and, fitted correctly, certainly do work to provide platform to attach a rifle scope too. Certainly a very traditional but out of the ordinary choice but very possibly responsible for more things shot (both 4 legged and 2) than any other?
At a push some original replacement woodwork is relatively easy to find and could easily be used to turn this back into an almost perfect military spec. example too. (Front bead and no bayonet fitting accepted).
I actually have another very similar rifle here that we put into a replacement synthetic stock. After a little work to the trigger it shot a touching group at 100 yards. I am not sure if that wasn’t a couple of years younger too!
