Model 1923 Traditional Bolt Action Sporting Rifle in .303 British from BSA, England. RARE and Highly collectable pieces of British Rifle making engineering history. I have seen way poorer examples fetch way more money. One example was in a previous Gavin Gardiner auction. (As also detailed on other adverts I have running for other examples).
That particular piece is detailed here:
The ‘Scottish / Gleneagles Sale’ 26th AUG 2019. LOT 13, Described as: ‘BSA A SCARCE .303 NITRO EXPRESS MODEL 1923 BOLT ACTION SPORTING RIFLE’ and HIGHLY COLLECTABLE with a GUIDE price estimate between £500 and £800. ….. There is ALSO commission and VAT to add on the hammer price.
The hammer dropped at the high estimate of £800 top. With commissions that cost the buyer over £1000!
24” (610mm) Barrel set to a stock / Trigger pull of 13 ½” (343mm). Combined, they bring in an overall length of 44 3/8” (1127mm) and a Bare Weight of 8 Lb 1 oz (3.653 Kg).
SADLY, I have to detail the inside does not match the outside. It is now clean but is showing wear. Not through shooting, rather neglect and lack of care. Time allowing, I will get this out to test fire. If for nothing more than curiosity. I CAN state I have shot rifles in worse condition and still had Sub-MOA groups.
IF not, it could / would still be well worth considering a re-barrel.
If so, personally, and for ‘historic’ reasons I would stick with the original calibre. However, the actions are perfectly suitable for any other round that would function in the magazine etc.
Highly Decorative Stock with a Heavy Grain Contrast. Raised Cheek Rest with Checkering to the Grip areas still reasonably sharp and crisp. Original BSA Logo Black Plastic Butt Plate too. White spacer to both the Butt as well as Grip Cap. Itself detailed with the Iconic BSA Piled Arms Trademark and BSA detail.
Full length, Mauser 98 style extractor claw for a Controlled Feed and Guaranteed extraction. The Action already pre-drilled and tapped, ready to accept suitable scope mount bases. They currently appear unused given the original blanking grub screws are all still in place. Zero evidence of them ever being out or any bases fitted.
The rifle IS already fitted with a Parker Hale Pivot in / out PH 16H Rear Dioptre / Open sight too. As pictured. Also still in place is the original Ramped Adjustable Rear Open / Iron Barrel mounted Iron sight. Quite a LOT of interest from people these days who want to go back to shooting like this too. Basically, sick and tired of shooting live quarry and targets with a scope like a torpedo. Way too big magnification and simply INSANE degrees of gadgetry built in. For those who relate to these comments and want to get back to being a TRUE ‘Rifleman’. THIS (or something similar) could well be your answer.
The Magazine Floor Plate is also a copy of the original Mauser 98 military version. ‘Fixed’ unless / until the bottom latch is depressed with a suitable ‘tool’. Then slide back to disengage the latch so it and any live rounds simply drop into the hand. Alternatively use the bolt to unload each round manually.
The external finish can only be described as EXCELLENT given consideration to age. Some LIGHT rust / corrosion evident to the side of the target dioptre sight. Otherwise generally Fantastic throughout.
