STEYR MANNLICHER MODEL L .243 BOLT ACTION VARMINT / TARGET.
RARE EXAMPLE Heavy Barreled .243 Calibre, Bolt Action Model L Rifle from Steyr Mannlicher. A LONG (by today’s standards) 25 1/2″ (645mm) Heavy Weight Barrel that finishes with an approx. 3/4″ (19mm) diameter muzzle. Original factory none screw cut crown too. The barrel does also feature the usual Steyr ‘Barley Twist’ finish. However, you do need to catch the light to pick it out, but the original matching Proof stamps confirm. It is also stamped as follows: UNORM M3170 STLF3. Scales show a bare weight of 8 Lb 2 1/2 oz (3.7 Kg).
The Walnut Stock measures to a pull of 14 5/8″ (373mm) bringing in an overall length of 45″ (1143mm). It also has suitably heavier proportions to the for-end finishing circa 2″ (50mm) deep x wide. As such offering up an extremely stable platform to accept a bi-pod etc. Fox or Skip Cut Chequering (which I personally like but know others do not). The grip also features a nice Palm Swell along with Thumb Rest for a Very Positive hold. Standard Detachable Steyr Rotary Magazine and fitted with a Double Set or Hair Trigger. BEFORE you ‘panic’ they ARE EASY to use as well as return to SAFE or standard trigger use. On this particular brand its a case of applying the side safety and simply gently squeezing the front trigger. That releases the rear / set trigger blade back to its none engaged position. Cocking indicator to the back of the bolt body too.
It ALWAYS surprises me why the bulk of UK rifle shooters shy away from triggers like this. They can and DO offer the opportunity to improve accuracy by BIG margins. ALL anyone needs to do is simply learn how to put the rifle back to SAFE should the shot not be taken. IT AINT the proverbial ROCKET SCIENCE!
A Strong Straight Grain with some Nice Cross / Vertical Pattern Tiger Stripe Highlights, mainly to the front half. Raised Cheek Rest and Original But Pad. The stock is also fitted with flush Quick Release Sling Swivel points. I will have a set if required.
These were and still remain some of the most accurate standard factory options available and Superbly Engineered. In this heavy barrel format, I can imagine it will give anything brand new today a run for its money. I will go so far as to say this: In the right hands, with the right ammunition this should do little more than make the first hole slightly bigger.
