Hand Built / Re-barrelled American P17 Military Bolt Action Rifle now in a Sporting format .338-06 Calibre.
Performance to match as, NO doubt, will the person who buys it!
The calibre is basically a spin off from the better known .30-06, that case re-necked to accept the larger diameter bullet. It gives similar performance as a .338 Win Mag but with a lot friendlier recoil. As such the overall weight of the rifle can be kept down compared with other .338 calibre rifles. SHOULD prove VERY effective on the hill in Scotland or anywhere a longer shot is a necessity.
As said, this will very likely have begun life as an ‘American Enfield’ Military P17 rifle. Immensely strong they were often converted to shoot various calibres from .303 up over. Most however in target format with matching stocks and single load capacities.
This is built in a True Sporting format with suitable stock along with Barrel Mounted Front Sling Point. Like so many made for use on Safari / Plains Game etc. or anywhere large game species are found. Not to say it is out of place here in the UK. Certainly perfectly good for all British Deer especially the larger species. Plus Wild Boar.
Hand Carving of a Fallow head and neck to the right hand side of the stock attests to that.
I suppose it WILL make someone a great rifle in an animal park or farming larger species like Buffalo etc.
24 ¾” (630mm) NONE threaded barrel fitted with a Williams Fully Adjustable open ‘v’ sight. The action fitted with a Mauser Style Drop out Magazine Floor Plate to take 3, possibly 4 rounds. Plus one in the chamber. A ½” (12mm) Recoil Pad to the Strong Straight Grained Stock gives a pull of 13 ¾” (350mm). Overall length finishing at 45 3/8”. (1153mm). At 8 ½ Lbs (3.858 Kg) bare weight this is not bad at all for what it is. Antler Grip cap with some exceptionally deep channels. I would have loved to have seen the head it came from. Trigger is a two stage with a superb clean and not too heavy release.
The action is also fitted with a pair of original Parker Hale bases, the rear machined to suit. Plenty of inch and 26mm matching rings in stock. If you want a 30mm tube scope its probably easier to sort replacements which can be discussed when purchasing.
CERTAINLY an unusual and none too common a chance for the person who wants to walk their own path. Generally great condition throughout too.
There IS an RCBS 2 piece F.L. die set along with a small selection of heads included with this sale.
