A CLASSIC Sporting rifle built on a GENUINE Mauser Mod 98 action. Chambered in the EQUALLY CLASSIC European FAVOURITE 7x64mm Brenneke.
Production of this calibre began in 1917 by necking down the 8mm version he had previously designed. With this, the German Gentleman by the name of Brenneke found himself with a TRULY classic HIGH PERFORMANCE cartridge. Capable of sending out a 130grn projectile at near enough 3000 ft/sec with over 2800 ft/lbs of energy proved popular. Even a substantially bigger 174grn bullet head only lost around 10% velocity. It soon became a firm favourite amongst shooters on mainland Europe. The knock down capabilities on all types of game was extremely effective and difficult to better. The 7mm Brenneke IS one of the most effective rounds ever created. EXTENSIVELY chosen and still used on all types of hunting from stalking to large driven game shoots.
This HAND BUILT rifle is in great condition throughout considering it will be no ‘spring chicken’. The front receiver ring is bare. The original Military Mauser Oberndorf details are now gone. However the original Mod. 98 detail is still showing on the left hand side giving a good clue as to its origin.
The barrel is a relatively light profile and approx.. 23 ½” with the original ramp mounted front bead still in place. HOPEFULLY I will have a suitable dovetailed rear ‘V’ sight to slide back into the cut out. The rifle has had a side mounted scope mounting bracket at some point too. I do get these types of mounts from time to time. However these days they command good prices for good examples. An alternative will be to have the action rings drilled and tapped. Then a set of standard, readily available bases and mounts can be fitted to scope you choose.
The bolt is fitted with the traditional ‘flag safety’ so often found on these rifles. Also, as is common, the action has the standard Double Set Trigger. The standard front trigger is a two stage. Engaging the rear / hair trigger cocks the front ready to go with the lightest of touches. All fully adjustable to suit the individual as required and preferred.
A nicely understated but again CLASSIC 14 ¼” well patterned stock. It appears to be more a Maple Walnut with Bavarian cheek piece configuration. It also mounts well to either shoulder too so perfectly usable for a left or right handed shot. This is just ‘one of those’ CLASSY feeling rifles / guns that turn up from time to time. The few that somehow puts a smile on my face (and hopefully) yours too. A mini Schnabel forend puts this from a time when quality was found top of the list with the maker. Profit was on there somewhere just somewhere lower down.
I cannot imagine the gun will not shoot as well and very possibly better than most people would hope for.
