Bolt Action .303 Lee Enfield SMLE Ex British Military Service Rifle. Quite an interesting example. Checking the Action Band stamps there is the correct and as you would hope and expect Crown logo atop GR. Then dated to 1915 with SHT LE III below. Original Magazine Cut Off also in place and functional. This, like SO many others, sports several serial numbers. A common enough occurrence given when they were made, what for and seen live action.
Original barrel number shows as 8590 but struck off and re-stamped to match. However something obviously went wrong or a ‘Friday afternoon job’ after a liquid lunch. Its actually stamped £978 instead of T978!
Brass Disc inset to the stock suggests an Arabic connection. No real way of detailing the stamping etc. One set is a group of 3 Military ‘Crows Foot’, left, right and from below. Several other stamps present too.
The Bore looks just about Pristine with the rest of the rifle not that far behind. In reality a SUPERB example of a CLASSIC and ICONIC piece of British Military History. Its now 107 years old and will, I have zero doubt, shoot more than acceptably. Generally the main thing to let any and all of the Enfield (and other military options) is the Trigger Pull. Fare enough when in battle I suppose but for modern target shooting a bit numb.
I do recall another example of this that was lucky to put 3 out 5 onto an A4 sheet at 100 Yards.
A little trigger work later and the same rifle was producing an ¾” at the same distance. An AMAZINGLY accurate rifle considering its original purpose.
Standard 10 Round Detachable Magazine. TRY not to lose it as they are getting to be silly money to replace. Original Windage and Elevation Adjustable Battle Sights Graduated from 200 through to 2000 Yards. What WAS the original mile plus shot and that with open sights. NOT the 30x magnification and bigger scope with built in bullet drop self-adjusting windage compensation built in laser guidance system. As seems to be the ‘norm’ these days.
General Spec. is a 25” (635mm) Barrel and a Stock Pull at 13 ¼” (337mm). Together they bring in an Overall Length of 44 5/8” (1134mm) and weigh in at 8 Lbs 12 ¼ oz (3.977 Kg).
