Model | Box Lock None Ejector |
Side by Side Box lock, Double Trigger, None-Ejector 20g Shotgun by J. P. Sauer & Sohn of Suhl, Germany. THESE ARE SIMPLY JUST FANTASTICALLY WELL MADE GUNS. CERTAINLY, on a par with ANYTHING New or Old.
You tell me what else is out there with individually numbered lock parts. Everything SERIOUSLY Fantastically well Designed and Machined. Then Hand Polished before final fitting and finishing. Built in Cocking Indicators. A 3 Bite Lock up. Clipped Fences (where the barrels overlap to each side of the action). It’s an EXPERT job to get a perfect fit with both sides just flat. THINK about how much better you need to be to get these to marry up properly! I could continue but suggest you just make the effort to call in and take a look for yourself.
28 1/4″ (720mm) Barrels with Fixed Chokes at ¼ and ½’ and Traditional ‘Old English’ 2 ½ (65mm) chambers. No one NEEDS anything more or bigger. Need convincing? Check out what was used when World Record game bags were shot on Grouse moors or any BIG shoots. ALL from times when even 2 ¾ (70mm) cartridges were not even ‘a thing’. Jointed with a Matt Machines Concave Tapering Rib with front sight bead. Stock Pull measures 14 3/8″ (365mm) and brings in an Overall Length of 44 1/2″ (1130mm). Scales register a great big 5 Lb 14 ¼ oz (2.674 Kg). EASY enough to carry about all day long, even for someone only half-way fit. Automatic Tang Safety.
I do not recall when ‘we’ started insisting none UK made guns had to be stamped like this. It did not last long. Quite frankly any other guns I have seen detailed the same have ALL been such High Quality. Not particularly expensive, even Brand New. With MOST ‘English guns’ not even competing on build or price. If I was one such maker, I would PROUDLY stamp my guns like that. Make SURE there was zero room for any confusion!
A Pistol Grip Stock with Black Grip Cap. Referring back to the quality AGAIN, even the screw for this is Hand Engraved. Semi-Schnable Finish to the For-end with the Cast, if anything, for Left-Handed mount. That said, I am a ‘righty’ and I could Happily use this. I get zero rib in view and centred to the front bead. As with so many of these ‘Continental / European’ guns,
This has a Good, Strong Straight Grain with Decent Dark Contrast. Especially to the Right side. This COULD actually be a Dark piece of Maple Walnut. The Grain pattern is THAT tight. One small and OLD repair to the Toe. Still solid and as good as the day it was done. All finished with a Dark Walnut 1/4″ (7mm) Butt Plate. That too with Hand Cut Cross Lines to help prevent and slip in the shoulder. All of the Woodwork is Exceptionally Clean with Minimal signs of use or marks.
A Bright finished Action with Minimal Boder Line and Small Vignette panels of Engraving. Originally these guns all came with sling attachment fittings. A VERY handy feature for long and / or walked up shooting days. The two fixing screws are still in place to the lower rib. The butt stud is also removed with the hole neatly filled and all re-finished.
The original Barrel Blueing shows mild signs of wear but not much all things considered: Age, plus it IS a used gun etc. Any and all blemishes are Very Minor and slight in reality.
THEN THERE ARE more and more None Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern day shooting. Given its supposedly so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters. How is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?
Anyway, take a look for yourself:

NOW, to TRY and help speed up availability I WILL also suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ALL of us start to ask whoever we buy from why they are not DEMANDING these cartridges? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.
YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons. RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
