DELICIOUSLY made 12g Side by Side Boxlock Ejector Double Trigger Shotgun from J. P. Sauer and Sohn, Suhl, Germany. These guns are a TRUE DELIGHT inside. Bear in mind most parts are actually number stamped to the gun. THAT is how much attention to detail and final HAND FINISHING went into these FINE examples of Gunsmithing. Can ANYONE tell me any manufacturer doing that to their guns today? One or two. THEN take a look at the waiting list let alone the price tags even before VAT gets added.
28 5/16” (720mm) Fixed Choke Barrels at ½ and Full and standard English Game Cartridge chambers of 2 ½” (65mm). YET AGAIN I WILL STATE NO ONE NEEDS ANYTHING MORE. Quite HOW anyone managed to shoot prior to the introduction of bigger cartridges is beyond me. ALSO, consider powder, wad and shot development and improvements since then. A standard 2 ½” shell is likely 50% better than they ever were when that’s all there was!
Stock offers up an original trigger pull at 14 7/8” (377mm) to combine for an overall 45 1/8” (1145mm) total length. Scales offer up a Solid 6 lbs 15 oz (3.138 Kg). As such a somewhat SOLID gun for a Side by Side.
Even the bulk of the main Action Screws are all ‘Double Screw’ style. As Original Mauser Rifles etc. with the much smaller ‘locking’ screw holding the main structural option in perfect place. LOOK at this and look at others. Its NOT difficult to start and see what I am spouting on about. At least as long as you have eyes as well as a little bit of something in the space behind to process things!
Automatic Safe set up as every Game Gun should be. Minimum Hand Engraving and I suspect the original finish was Full Colour Case Hardened. There is still minimal amount just rear of the back trigger. No matter as the gun looks just as nice in what would be detailed as a ‘Bright Finish’.
Chequering is also still pretty clean and well defined with the Original Gloss Finish to stock in matching condition. A Strong Straight Grain right through to its Red 1” (25mm) Recoil Pad. The stock is also all but if not actually straight. To work for a Right Handed shot the left side is lightly scalloped out. It then offers up what a light bend would by way of Cast. I would say this IS original as comments on the condition of the original finish would concur. The ‘beauty’ of doing it this way? The gun will then also offer up pretty well to a true left handed shot too. As such ambidextrous.
As for the Lead Sh-t ‘FIASCO’? READ ON:
THERE ARE more and more None Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern day shooting. IF its so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters how is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?

NOW, to TRY and help speed up availability I WILL also suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ALL of us start to ask whoever we buy from why they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.
YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons. RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
