COGSWELL AND HARRISON 12g CROWN XXV ASSISTED OPENER SHOTGUN.

Highest Quality ASSISTED OPENING Cogswell and Harrison 12g, Side by Side, Crown XXV Model, Side Lock Ejector, Shotgun.

ACTUALLY THE NUMBER 2 GUN OF A MATCHING PAIR / TRIO ETC.? It also has an Irish connection. The barrels stamped up with  ‘Supplied by Helys Ltd.’ to the left and ‘Dame Street, Dublin’ on the right.

(The property still exists, apparently converted to a pub at some point so any information welcome).

As the model would suggest 25” (Actually 25 1/16 “ (636mm) barrels with Fixed Chokes at Improved Cylinder and Half. The gun in Beautiful condition throughout. A Concave ¼” (6mm) rib and the Side Locks are all signed, as expected, by the maker. Cogswell and Harrison Ltd. 168, Piccadilly, London.

The Bright Finished Action and Locks are beautifully finished with intricate Hand Cut Scroll Engravings. All with the same matching detail to the Blued Top lever, Trigger guard and Tang. A LONG pull length of 15 3/8” (391mm) includes the inch Rubber Recoil pad.

A PIECE OF TRUE GUNMAKERS CRAFTSMANSHIP.

It IS a Very Nice, Highly Contrasting, Strong and Straight Grained Walnut Stock. The ‘Tear Drops’ detail is always a nice addition too, as is the Very Fine Hand Cut Chequering. Everything is still well defined and ‘half way’ sharp to the touch. It is impossible for the gun to have seen much use since new. Also with the gun is the original Hard Plastic Butt Plate. This would put the gun back to its original stock length of approx. 14 ½” (368mm). R/H cast and a SUPERB choice for the moors on Grouse or in the lowlands for Partridge and Pheasant.    …… As well as anything else. True Traditional English Game Gun with 2 ½” (65mm) Chambers the gun tips the scales at 6 Lbs 14 ½ oz. Also comes with its original FULL Leather Hard Motor / Travel case.

EVEN MORE VALUE.

The gun also came in with a works receipt from work carried out in July 2016. It details A Live test fire £55. Full Inspection Service and Clean £195. 2 New firing pins £150 the pair. Re-time the ejectors / action £85. New right hand swivel hand machined from bar stock £125.

All that gave a grand total of £655 spent on the gun. It saw daylight on approx. 8 occasions since, each time on 50 -100 bird days amongst 8 guns.

THE STEEL SHOT DEBACLE?

FIRST THING:  Given lead is SO dangerous, can we ask about getting every lead water main replaced? After all, ANYONE with one of those still supplying water has zero choice. LETS PUT THAT QUESTION TO HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE AS WELL AS THE GOVERNMENT.
That is every child’s grazed knee washed out with lead infested water (direct into their blood stream. Every glass of juice. Every cup of tea or coffee, Vegetables washed and cooked in the stuff. ALL that DELICIOUS Gravy. Cloths washed in it. Then we bath in the sodding lead infested stuff!
HOW DO THEY DEFEND THIS FACT?
THEN THERE ARE more and more Non-Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern-day shooting. APPARENTLY so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters? How is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?
Anyway, take a look for yourself:
NOW, TRY and help speed up availability. I WILL suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ask whoever we buy from WHY they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.
YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through, but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons.                                                     RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
