MAUSER 98 ACTION HAND BUILT 8X57 / 7.92 CLASSIC SPORTING RIFLE.

Individually Hand Built, Mauser 98 Action, Absolutely Classic English Style Sporting Rifle in 8mm Mauser / 8×57 / 7.92 Calibre. Actually, all one and the same as ammunition / calibre goes.

WAY more Common and Appreciated over on Mainland Europe. ESPECIALLY for Wild Boar and BIG Red Deer, even Moose and Bear. Afterall, that is where it was invented. It is also what our .303 was up against for many years. An ‘old’ calibre these days, as are SO MANY. A little sad as still WAY past more than capable for anything anyone will encounter here or there.

WHY does it always have to be something new to market? The ‘latest / greatest / fastest / flattest SUPER DUPER all singing / all dancing’. Why do none of the so-called experts and manufacturers not simply try re-igniting interest in PERFECTLY Good older calibres? Many all but forgotten about. But still more than enough that offered up as good and better results for decades, if not a century plus.

THANKFULLY, still a limited few who still realize and KNOW things like this still exist. Also, that they are WELL worth seeking out and using to great success. LONG may it remain so too but we ARE a Rare Breed these days. Makes little odds passing comments like this as its only these people who will be looking. As such little chance of ‘offending’ those who think they need the newest ‘invention’ available.

23 ½” (595mm) Barrel with a NICE (for recoil) 15” (380mm) Long Stock / Pull length. Overall, the rifle finishes a straight 45” (1143mm) and tips in at only 7 Lb plus ¾ oz (3.196 Kg). Possibly a little light given the recoil. I DO suspect though, that the stock design will offer relief and transfer any well. Calibres like this can and do let you know if not held properly. However, they are also way less savage than others with equivalent performance.

Anyway, if you’re looking, it’s likely the bulk, if not all the above, is already known. As such I will get back to the rifle details:

This IS just one of those ‘Oldies’ that simply OOZES ‘Old School’ / ‘Niceness’ / Quality / Class / Charm. Call it what you will. If you understand that then it’s a rifle to take a look at even if no intention of buying. If you don’t it’s a waste of everyone’s time. The Action Very Nicely Hand Engraved, it came in from an owner who used it exactly as is. Over the Original Open / V / Iron Sights. Apparently surprisingly accurate too, once he practiced a little. He bought it as is without any mounts or telescopic sight. It’s possible this can be sorted out reasonably easily if needed. However, there IS a growing number returning to the ‘old ways’. If for nothing other than the challenge and simple JOY. With scope options these days it’s EASY to make shooting so simple and easy any challenge disappears. When that goes the enjoyment is usually close behind!

Anyway, as said, either replacement modern day Dovetail Claw Mount Bases and Rings. OR possibly even find a set of matching older Claws. Rail or Ring versions.

****AS THINGS ARE, I DO ACTUALLY HAVE a suitable set with a Swarovski Habicht Fixed 6 x 42 Scope. This is part of another rifle currently for sale. That WILL require a little astute final fitting file work. However, it will be minimal as already very close and centres match etc. As such the first rifle to sell gets first option on that scope. Images will be added to both adverts etc.

It WILL obviously be at additional cost though. Especially given if this rifle it leaves the original scope less etc.

Blacking to the Bolt Shaft shows minimal wear. The Large Almost Flat Butter Knife Handle is showing the original Blued finish well worn. However, that is pretty obviously from rubbing whilst being carried rather than wear from being fired. It simply does not match the condition found on the rest of the rifle everywhere else. A Low-Level Parker Hale Safety fitted to the rear of the bolt too. Offering the opportunity for a MUCH lower scope mount position over traditional Mauser Flag safeties.

A Double / Twin Set or Hair Trigger in place too.

As per many of my adverts for rifles with these fitted: BEFORE you ‘panic’ it CAN be used OR simply adjusted out of play. Why anyone would, I fail to understand. The ONLY thing anyone needs to do is know how to operate one. To return it back to standard pull and / or make safe. On this rifle, the same as all others, its SIMPLICITY. Apply the safety and then simply squeeze the front trigger blade. That releases the Rear (Set) Trigger to its none engaged position. Another option is to just lift the bolt handle, disengage and physically move the blade back to its standard position. JOB DONE.

All that detailed, I again ask the question of WHY anyone would not make use of one? It is a strange state within UK shooting that the bulk tend to shy away. However, those that do give one a chance often never wants anything different. Wonder quite why they took so long to discover etc.

The benefits for accuracy tend to clearly show down range once you get used to one. As said, the ONLY thing you need to be aware of is how to make the rifle safe again. That and keep your finger off it until you want to fire. It’s NOT difficult … or shouldn’t be.

Alternatively, they CAN usually be adjusted completely out of play. Then the ‘standard’ trigger simply works exactly as a standard trigger does.

Safari Style Barrel Mounted and Soldered Front Sling Point. A Very Pleasant Light Hazel Nut Brown (Very possibly) Maple Walnut Stock. All Chequering still Crisp and Sharp offering yet more proof of how little use to date.

Everything (to me) is of Seriously Fine Proportions from tip to toe. I will liken it to one of my own rifles I describe the same way. Say the norm is a lady of a dress size 12 in the hand. THIS feels more like a VERY Shapely and Petite 6-8. That analogy detailed, it is only fair to state that some DO enjoy plenty to hold. Others prefer smaller proportions.

One 100 Yard / Metre Fixed Rear Open V Sight with an additional Flip Up / Down for 200 Yard impact. The Magazine Housing and Hinged Floor Plate all with Matching Engraving to the Action. A Raised Cheek Rest and finished off with a 1” (25mm) Black Recoil Pad.

As detailed, the original Bases still in place for Quick Detachable Claw Mounts. As can be seen there are two to the front. One for a tube / rail mount and the other for an Objective Bell position.
