SMLE / LEE ENFIELD CIVILIAN CONTRACT .303 BOLT ACTION TARGET RIFLE.
Civilian Contract SMLE Bolt Action .303 British Bolt Action Dedicated Target Rifle from Lee Enfield / Fulton’s. I say Civilian Contract as I doubt this was ever put into military service. Could be wrong but given no rear open / battle sight I suspect not. It’s been made like this. Stayed like this. Been Loved, Cherished and Cared for like this. I think it is only fare it STAYS LIKE THIS. Or at least people have the opportunity to buy exactly like this. If not, then happy to strip it down to a basic rifle and price accordingly. However, that WOULD be something of a shame.
General Spec. Offers up a standard 25 1/4″ (640mm) Barrel with a Stock Length of 13 5/8″ (347mm). They combine to bring in an overall length of 44 1/2″ (1130mm) to the tip of the bayonet lug. Total weight with everything detailed and pictured tips scales at 9 Lb 6 ½ oz (4.263 Kg).
The rifle is in SUPERB Condition throughout, ESPECIALLY given the date of manufacture. Action Band is stamped with The Crown and E.R. (An INCREDIBLE) 1908 Date Stamp and then SHt L.E. III. Also detailed with Regulated by Fulton to the flat at the top of the Front Action Ring. No idea what (if any) other little ‘treasures’ there might be below the rear Top Wood. Being a dedicated Target Rifle it does not simply lift off and unclip as a standard Military Service Rifle does.
It comes with a Pretty RARE Sprung Clip-On Front Bead Sight Protector (which sell for quite a lump by themselves these days). All Serial Numbers also match and, Thankfully, still the correct era, Original Bolt Rear Cocking Knob. (FAR too many ‘cobbled’ together with incorrect for period parts). The Rile also has its Magazine Cut Off Slide still in place and operational too. Another rare little piece is the Target Sling Swivel point immediately forward of the 10 Round Capacity Detachable Magazine. This not only ‘swings’ but also rotates and is not a common find.
To finish the Dedicated Target Rifle specifications off: The Original (and Correct) Parker Hale PH 5A Twin Zero Peep Sight. That fitted with Matching Deluxe Micro Adjustable Peep Hole Dioptre Eye piece. All rare enough pieces in their own right.
Woodwork does have a few minor and light marks, small dings and blemishes. However, as stated above, this does date back to a production date of 116 YEARS AGO (1909)! As such I consider it to be in REMARKABLE Condition. Apart from anything else (to me) what ‘scars and wounds’ there are serve only to enhance a Rifle such as this. They help give it the character it has spent over a CENTURY earning and now SO WELL Deserves.
This REALLY DOES NOT and WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. A TRUE Piece of British SMLE History and, in reality, actually an Investment Opportunity. With a Little Common Sense and Reasonable Care, you can carry on shooting this for many years. ALSO Thoroughly Enjoy all the envious looks along the way and after all that Very Probably, ultimately, MAKE money. There is little available worldwide that the same can be said for. As per all the details above this is ready to simply take out, load up and shoot. A few final clicks of adjustment to check bull, then just simply enjoy yourself for
as long as you wish. I will also include a GOOD sling too.
