A GREAT little example of this classic and now VERY collectable Winchester .22 rim fire, Model 69, Bolt Action Rifle.
NOT classing this as a ‘sleeper’. Definitely lovingly used over the years but in reality this is still in FANTASTIC condition. ESPECIALLY considering it is one of the earlier models dating back to between 1935 and 1937.
The safety is incorporated into the rear of the bolt. Pulling the rear cocking piece back and rotating it sets the safe position. The original 5 round detachable magazine is also with the rifle. No doubt because of the VERY positive catch mechanism . See the push button feature to the left side of the stock. (It’s possible I may well have a spare somewhere too)?
The purposefully long barrel at 25” was a deliberate design feature to counteract customer comments. Earlier rifles from Winchester failed to sell as well as hoped for or expected. In reality the cartridge we all predominantly shoot is the .22 LR. The LR denotes LONG RIFLE. As such ammunition performs best through a LONG BARREL, as designed. The barrel is also stamped / detailed to take .22 SHORT. LONG + LONG RIFLE. (As so many were in those days)
The 13 ½” VERY NICELY figured Walnut stock is the main reason this has been looked after so well, so long. Also designed as a take down rifle simply undo the single ‘coin slotted’ action screw and the stock lifts away. The fact that it protrudes below is another date give away. For a .22 that is well over 80 years old it puts most rifles that followed into the shade.
This is one of the higher grade / more sophisticated receiver mounted open sight versions. The sadly, now empty cross dovetail slot confirms this. Standard dovetail blocks are now fitted to incorporate an after-market scope and mounts.
In reality this could be a museum piece now let alone in a few years!
