Bolt Action .270 Calibre DELUXE Model LSA 55 Action Tikka Rifle still in Full Original Spec. 22” (560mm) None screw cut barrel and still retaining its Original Open / Iron Sights. Stock Pull measures 14 ¼” (363mm) and combines for an overall length of 42 ¾” (1087mm). Scales register weight as images of 7 Lbs 13 ½ oz (3.555 Kg).
Fox or Skip Cut Chequering still in Great Condition and something I always think adds a Nice ‘Extra’ Aesthetics. Rosewood Forend Tip and Grip cap (Which is the basic difference for a Deluxe version. One Inch (25mm) Recoil Pad and a Detachable Magazine. The standard / usual parallel Tikka Dovetail to the action top. I will have matching contemporary rings and bases to suit. Certainly in inch as well as 26mm. Any bigger scope tube and most likely something newer like Opti-Lock etc. The Roll Over Cheek Piece HAS been reduced and will now mount well to either shoulder. Probably exactly why it was done by a previous owner.
There are maybe a half dozen or so minor blemishes mainly to the woodwork. However, considering the age this rifle is I still consider it bordering Excellent Condition.
I HAVE also taken this out and shot it. Had to go with a few others and this arrived at the exact right time. I put three rounds of 130 gr RWS ‘T Mantel’ ammunition through and MARGINALLY over an inch group. I’ll say with confidence its way more capable than that. However, I had to move on to the other guns and time was limited. Get used to the trigger and any group will improve. Find an even ‘friendlier’ ammunition and NO DOUBT its still EASILY Capable of Sub 1” (25mm) at 100 yards.
There is NO NEED WHAT SO EVER to spend any more money. This is as accurate and more than the average person shooting any rifle. Also in one of if not THE most ‘forgiving’ calibres available. Circa 40 years ago a .270 WAS THE ‘be all and end all’ calibre. I have yet to find anything that manages to DUMP its energy as efficiently as a .270. Hit a Red Stag in the boiler room with a 130 Gr head and its lucky to take 2 – 3 steps before its falling over. The same cannot be said for many to most other options out there. Bump up to 150 Gr head weights and they are even more effective!
JUST DEVESTATING. It’s the MAIN reason why they were as popular back then. I just wait for the time when one or more of the media ‘experts’ picks back up on this calibre.
YES, it certainly did basically drop off any ‘radars’ back then. The MAIN reasons were two fold. No 1 was definitely the NOISE! Where a .243 / .308 etc. goes bang a .270 goes BOOOOOMMM!
No 2 was felt recoil. A WELL designed and made stock WOULD transfer semi NASTY recoil effectively into the shoulder. Even with the very best you still KNEW what you were shooting with. Get involved with a poor or just plain BAD stock and it was like getting a PUNCH to the face. Every time without fail. Regardless of how the stock was held. That’s like a punch from a more than half way handy 17 stone plus fella!
The end result was usually developing shot flinch. I.E. Closing your aiming eye as the trigger is squeezed in anticipation of the next ‘punch’. Seriously BAD NEWS as far as accurate shooting goes.
Either reason was probably sufficient to turn the then ‘modern’ shooter just entering the pastime elsewhere. Put BOTH into the equation and you begin t understand its demise. MANY stuck with .270 though. Because of its PHENOMENAL down range results.
This is perfectly acceptable (for me) exactly how it is. Yes, THAT recoil and noise IS there but its easily manageable. At least I found it an easy enough rifle to shoot ‘BARE’. Sort out a Moderator (IF you NEED to) and this WILL give Perfectly good shooting for as long again. Probably twice and more ‘around the clock’!
