PARKER HALE 12G SIDE LOCK, SIDE by SIDE MODEL 604 SHOTGUN.

ARCHIVE SECTION AS NOW SOLD.

12 gauge Side by Side Parker Hale, model 604, Side lock Ejector Shotgun.
Listed in various editions of their catalogues as follows. THE STANDARD GRADE SIDE LOCK EJECTOR GAME GUN. The direct copy from the catalogue states :

“The 600 Series, with specification to your own requirements. Fine Hand engraving and Best quality Walnut stock complement the superlative balance, look and performance of this classic gun. Also offered in pairs and triples.”

It continues….
“Never before has there been such demand for quality game guns in the classic English tradition. Together with a growing concern for value. Parker-Hale have answered both needs with the introduction of a new breed of side by sides. Designed and specified for the English shooter, with stocks tailored to his average size.

To manufacture these guns, we selected one of the few gunsmiths in Spain experienced in supplying the English market.  (Wonder WHO that was / is)? Skilled in producing true pairs and triples, perfectly matched in weight, balance and figure. Under our guidance, they produced a range with all the character and feel of English thoroughbreds. Fashioned after the example of traditional British gun making. All this makes the 600 Series familiar to the seasoned shooter and a classic introduction for the novice.

(Here comes the clue as to origin) All the guns have chopper lump forged barrels, disc set strikers, correctly formed chokes and concave English type rib, except the model 603 which has a Churchill type rib”.

THE GUN.

As above this is the STANDARD model 604 and was made to individual specification with HAND ENGRAVING to the action.

This gun comes in with approx. 27 ¾” barrels and chokes at ¼ and ¾ with 2 ¾” (70mm) chambers set onto the treble grip action. With a reasonably well figured 15″ stock retains crisp chequering but does have a few small blemishes including a small chip to the top left side at the butt pad. Nothing major for a gun around 30 plus years old and in reality a complete stock refinish will do nothing but justify the investment on such a classic piece of iconic British gun history, though in reality there is NO need for anything more than a reasonable amount of care and attention.

All in all this is a VERY NICE gun and anyone with an interest in or collecting Parker Hale OR just wanting a great inexpensive side lock!

THE STEEL SHOT DEBACLE?

FIRST THING:  Given lead is SO dangerous, can we ask about getting every lead water main replaced? After all, ANYONE with one of those still supplying water has zero choice. LETS PUT THAT QUESTION TO HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE AS WELL AS THE GOVERNMENT.
That is every child’s grazed knee washed out with lead infested water (direct into their blood stream. Every glass of juice. Every cup of tea or coffee, Vegetables washed and cooked in the stuff. ALL that DELICIOUS Gravy. Cloths washed in it. Then we bath in the sodding lead infested stuff!
HOW DO THEY DEFEND THIS FACT?
THEN THERE ARE more and more Non-Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern-day shooting. APPARENTLY so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters? How is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?
Anyway, take a look for yourself:
NOW, TRY and help speed up availability. I WILL suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ask whoever we buy from WHY they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.
YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through, but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons.                                                     RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
