Original .22 Rim-Fire Model 1900 Take Down Browning Semi-Automatic Rifle. Ultra Compact Screw Cut 1/2 x 20 UNF Barrel at 12″ (305mm), the minimum UK length permitted. However, FANTASTIC for pest and vermin control from a vehicle, even with a sound moderator fitted. Easily maneuvered to allow shooting from either side.
Stock length measures to 13 3/4″ (350mm) and FULL overall length is still only 29 3/4″ (755mm). Then we have the weight: At a Whopping 4 Lb 4 1/4 oz (1.935 Kg) it’s light enough for a bairn to carry all day and all night. Without ANY cause to moan.
Especially if you have ANY interest in design and / or engineering. Quite frankly it’s simple genius. The barrel detaches in a few seconds….literally about 3! The main action slide takes no longer. That consists of 5 main parts. 2 Springs, a guide rod, firing pin and the main block. Ejection is downward so 100% Ambidextrous. Equally useable for Left- or Right-handed shooting. The integral tubular magazine is all of impossible to lose too. Loading via the angled funnel on the right side of the stock OR remove the spring tube. Then simply slide in the ammunition and re-fit the magazine tube. As said, almost impossible not to be able to find the tube even if you did manage to lose it.
The stock features a Good Strong Straight Grain with some Reasonable Pattern and Contrast. Especially to the for-end. Factory Machined Standard width Dovetail to the action, ready for mounts and scope. I actually had one myself for years and thoroughly enjoyed every time I took it out. Eventually I succumbed to a customer pestering me to sell it. At the time I had little use as rabbits had all but disappeared on any permissions. It took him less than 3 weeks to arrive back with it all but ruined! He got barred for life.
Sadly, they are no longer an option to buy new here in the UK too. That said, I DO have very limited numbers of the Deluxe Engraved examples. See adverts for details if you want brand new. This does have a couple of light blemishes to the original varnish finish. Not much at all considering the age this will be. Personally, I would actually strip this back and re-finish with a Quality Stock Oil. Doing so would lift out what pattern and grain there is and turn this into an even prettier rifle.
