Description

BERETTA 12G OVER AND UNDER 687 SP (SILVER PIGEON) III SHOTGUN.

Model 687 SP – SILVER PIGEON Grade III 12G Over and Under Single Selective Trigger Multi-choke Ejector Shotgun from Beretta, Italy. Try that mouthful three times as fast as you can!

Cased and Complete with its original set of 5 Beretta OPTIMA Chokes, Oil Bottle and Choke Key. 30” (OBVIOUSLY) Multi-Choke Barrels with a ¼” (6mm) Ventilated Game Rib and Single Brass Front Sight Bead. 3” (75mm) Magnum Chambers and Fleur de Lisle stamped so Steel Proof. NOT that I would put steel through anyway. There ARE WAY better alternatives if ONLY shooters would demand it. SEE BELOW!

Trigger Pull measures to a fairly long 14 5/8” (378mm) and brings in an overall length at 47 ¾” (1213mm). ‘Fighting’ weight of 7 Lbs 5 ½ oz (3.335 Kg).

A Strong Straight Grain with the pattern carrying right through the stock and forend. Light Vertical Tiger Strip Highlights to both sides help. It does have a few ‘dry’ patches. Not entirely sure if this is through lack of care by the previous single owner since new. Or (I half suspect) just not a great original finish from the factory? Chequering is still nice and clean and the Top Lever still settles over to the right when closed. They NEVER stay there for long once a gun sees past minimal use so this has not done particularly much as yet.

Bright finished Action with General Scroll / Florel Engraving throughout all 4 faces. A Pheasant lifting to the Right, Grouse in flight left and Beretta Logo, Model and ‘Made in Italy’ bottom.

As detailed, looking at the resting position of the top lever. As well as the remaining Gold Wash to the trigger. The gun has not done a big amount of work so far. However, the previous owner (tells me brand new to him) has not ‘cherished’ the gun as others perhaps would. Equally, as detailed above, current condition may or may not be 100% down to him. Yes, a few blemishes and an odd scratch / ding here and there. As for the ‘dry patches’ it may simply NEED a few light drops of decent gun oil and elbow grease. I suspect it may well just as easily be a poor original finish from the beginning. Certainly not helped by minimal attention / maintenance from then on. It is what it is. Basically the platform of a VERY popular gun. Anyone willing to put a small amount of time and effort into it and you will see the benefit. Alternatively the entire woodwork could be completely re-finished and you would then have a gun circa 95% + as new. Still with DECADES of use left.

As for the Lead Sh-t ‘FIASCO’? READ ON:

THERE ARE more and more None Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern day shooting. IF its so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters how is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?

Anyway, take a look for yourself:

NOW, to TRY and help speed up availability I WILL also suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ALL of us start to ask whoever we buy from why they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.

YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!

On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons.                                                     RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
