A VERY RARE, UNUSUAL and certainly INTERESTING .22 Short Rim Fire Gallery / Rook AUTO EJECTION Rifle from Bayard, Belgium. EXCELLENT condition for what it is other than a chip missing from the toe of the stock. I cannot imagine there are many of these left these days.
19 ¼” (488mm) barrel FULLY stamped up as follows:
*ANCIENS ESTABLISSEMENTS PIEPER HERSTAL-BELGIUM BREVETE S.D.G.D. Patented JAN 12 1909 DEPOSE. .22 SHORT and the Makers logo of a Knight with Lance sat on Horseback to the action top. To the left of the forend it is additionally detailed J. NIKITITS ERBEN CONSTANTINOPEL. F.L .22 Belgian Proof Crown topped with an oval with ELG inside.
A Straight Pull Bolt Action it MUST be about one of the first ever even thought about. To cock you have to grip the small knurled ring at the back of the action / bolt and pull out. This locks open with the spring loaded catch seen to the left side of the action. Drop load a single cartridge onto the feed channel tray then depress the catch and feed the cartridge and bolt forward. Engage the safety also located to the left side or take aim and fire. A single knurled head screw to the stock forend allows for EASY take down of the rifle for transport / discretion.
The stock is from Maple Walnut with a pull length of 14” (355mm). Rounded Prince of Wales grip with chequering still good and well defined. Some very nice contrast but, as detailed, a chip missing from the toe. Overall the gun comes in at 38 ½” (978mm) and a ‘bantam weight’ total of 3 Lbs 7 ½ oz (1.578 Kg).
AN INTERESTING LITTLE RIFLE and true collectors piece, even with the missing chip. Plus a great choice for vintage competition target shooting.
