G. E. LEWIS & SONS 12G SIDE BY SIDE HAMMER SHOTGUN

Rather nice 12 Bore Side by Side Hammer Gun from G. E. Lewis and Sons. Birmingham. The are 30” (762mm). (It does not feel right using Metric on a gun like this!) Brown Rose Twist Damascus and choked at ¼ and ¾ with a Tapering Concave Rib. That has the makers full details engraved along the top. Chambers are 2 ¾” (70mm). The Bores are very clean and Walls have a LOT of life left in them.

Admittedly the Fine Cut Chequering is all but gone to the 14 ¼” (362mm) pull length Stock. It IS still Nicely Grained though and with Rounded Prince of Wales Grip.

Fully Hand Engraved. A depiction of a Pointer and Grouse to the Right Lock and a Spaniel and Ducks to the Left. Other Nice features are the unusually placed, still unused, Silver finished initials escutcheon. This is inlet to the top of the grip, just to the rear of the top lever and action tang. Also worth mention is the ‘Border line’ Engraved Steel Butt Plate. This is nicely inlet to finish flush with the back of the Walnut Stock. The central area nicely chequer cut too. This will minimize any slip in the shoulder.

One ODD thing.

The stock HAS a definite cast for a left handed shot. However, strangely seems to mount near perfect to my right shoulder. You would have to try it to believe it! (CLEVER gun makers back then. I have to say this has me slightly perplexed as to HOW it works for me but there we go). Given the age this will be it is still in Very Good order throughout. Yes, there ARE a couple of small chips, dents and dings. Personally I think it’s a FINE example of a RARE gun from a well-respected and sought after maker.

The last one of these was ‘affectionately’ called a ‘cripple stopper’. That had full chokes to each barrel designed for use for Wildfowling. It was in NOWHERE even close a condition to this and made similar money!

There is / was at the time of listing a similar gun also on Guntrader at £4295. (I do have to say that is MUCH prettier example). https://www.guntrader.uk/guns/shotguns/lewis-ge/hammer/12-gauge/damascus-190725081529004

THE STEEL SHOT DEBACLE?

FIRST THING:  Given lead is SO dangerous, can we ask about getting every lead water main replaced? After all, ANYONE with one of those still supplying water has zero choice. LETS PUT THAT QUESTION TO HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE AS WELL AS THE GOVERNMENT.
That is every child’s grazed knee washed out with lead infested water (direct into their blood stream. Every glass of juice. Every cup of tea or coffee, Vegetables washed and cooked in the stuff. ALL that DELICIOUS Gravy. Cloths washed in it. Then we bath in the sodding lead infested stuff!
HOW DO THEY DEFEND THIS FACT?
THEN THERE ARE more and more Non-Toxic Shot alternatives being produced. WITH near matching performances to traditional lead and close to, if not matching pressures. Take a look at Horton Gunmakers for their own entry into this debacle of modern-day shooting. APPARENTLY so lethally deadly to shooters and game eaters? How is it every old lead water main supply pipe is not getting ripped out and replaced? To my mind it’s a DISGRACE that the shooting industry did not simply ask that one simple question. NO, they saw an excuse to charge a fortune and that mainly to the detriment of the quarry. Just my opinion …..for what its worth?
Anyway, take a look for yourself:
NOW, TRY and help speed up availability. I WILL suggest that YOU pass on details to everyone you know who shoots. Then ask whoever we buy from WHY they are not DEMANDING cartridges made in this material? Basically VOTE with your WALLET.
YES, it will take a little time for everything to filter through, but patience IS a virtue. It also allows everyone who wants to keep hold of their ‘old favourite’ for the rest of their lives. Even pass it on to the next generation and hopefully beyond!
On that note I AM looking into the possibility of stocking some direct from Steve at Hortons.                                                     RING for an update and keep checking the web site.
