A CLASSIC .303 British Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle from The Ross Rifle Co. Quebec, Canada. This detailed as such to the Action and dated for 1905 with Patent details below. (On the Angled Flat to the L/H of the Action. Not Entirely Original but STILL certainly a Highly Collectable and RARE rifle for the UK market. Many others as well.
This example HAS been re-barrelled, apparently in 1951, by BSA. Fully Detailed as follows: SPECIAL BAS BARREL. SPECIFICATION 1951. WEIGHT UNDER 3 Lb 10oz. .303 MATCH CARTRIDGE. Then the expected Proof Stamps BV BO & NP with N.C31 (?) It does also appear to screw into a secondary sleeve in the main action. Presumably / Obviously the original barrel profile at the chamber was much bigger than the BSA replacement. Guessing mainly due to the barrel weight specification already detailed above.
1/ To simply test fire it and check accuracy potential.
2/ JUST to have a go for myself with such an ICONIC and EXTREMELY RARE WWI Rifle. It could be the only opportunity for such an experience with such a piece of World History.
Anyway, the Rifle spec. as follows: Barrel measures to 27 ¾” (705mm). Stock length / Trigger Pull is a Long 14 ¾” (375mm). They combine to an overall 48 7/8” (1240mm) and tip scales at 8 Lb 13 oz (4 Kg Straight). Aiming is via a relatively basic / simple rear iron / ‘v’ open sight and matching Front Bead. This with Quick Adjustment running from 30 out to 200 yards. With 3 mid position points between each detailed distance.
The stock itself is quite a Bonny example with a Strong Straight Grain. Crossed along its Entire length with ‘Tiger Stripe’ Highlights. The usual (for these rifles) Spliced in Cheek Rest. A Red 1” (25mm) recoil pad that IS showing its age too. I have tidied this up a little. Mainly to restore the nice contrast it offers.
As detailed above, this is a single shot / Fixed Magazine / Floor Plate and Trigger Guard option. Again, NO, not 100% original. However, still WAY better than nothing as far as a collector or anyone else wanting one is concerned. Find anything better and you can help fund it by selling this. In the meantime, YOU have this one to ENJOY.
