STEYR MANNLICHER SCHOENAUER .243 BOLT ACTION RIFLE.
This is a later ‘GK’ model rifle, designed, manufactured and produced in .243 calibre. The front action ring actually details this along with ‘Original Mannlicher Schoenauer. Made in Austria’ etc.so please, no comments about ‘not original’ or ‘they never made this calibre’.
In generally immaculate condition (considering) with only a couple of minor stock marks. Other than that the rifle is exceptionally clean throughout. The 23 ½” / (600mm) barrel IS missing the rear iron / open sight. I will have a suitable replacement to fit to the barrel band mounted dovetail cut out. Obviously removed at some point to accommodate a scope with a larger objective bell.
I actually shoot one of these rifles myself in .275 and they are a ‘delight’. The engineering and design is SUPERB. I have yet to find anything I would consider to be better.
People do ‘pass comment’ about a scope mounted high to accommodate the bolt throw. For practical stalking / shooting applications this makes zero difference. This rifle is has a side bracket scope mount incorporating 1” Windage Adjustable rings. They will accomodate anything up to a 56mm objective lens. The bolt incorporates the usual ‘flag safety’. The tang also has a shotgun style push / pull safety catch. If you have not yet seen the rotary magazines on these types of rifle the DO take a look. They ARE what every manufacturer since has emulated or copied to one degree or another.
The nicely figured stock comes in at a very usable 14 1/8” pull. As usual the rifles is set up with a right handed cheek piece. It also falls into a left handed shoulder perfectly too so EASILY used by either hand. Rosewood forend tip with very clean cut chequering and original sling studs. All showing little signs of much use. The only other point of interest is the double ‘set / hair trigger’. Learn how to use one and you will wonder how you ever managed before. Alternatively just disregard the back blade and use the fully adjustable front as a normal single trigger.
