The Mark X Mauser actions used in “Whitworth Express Rifles” were assembled in England by Whitworth Arms and imported into the US by Interarms.
Made in what was then Yugoslavia by a company named Zavodi Crvena Zastava. Other rifles, actions, and barrelled actions were imported directly from Yugoslavia by Interarms under The Mark X Mauser name.
After Interarms, The Mark X action was later imported by Charles Daly and most recently by Remington as the 798 series of rifles. The 1990’s Balkan War caused actions and rifles to dry up as far as new imports for a number of years. The US State Department then placing an embargo on the Yugoslavian arms trade.
The “mini-Mauser” action was also a Zastava product imported by Interarms, Daly, and Remington (Model 799)
The Mark X receivers had the ZCZ trademark – the three letters within a circle – stamped on the left side of the actions. This trademark and the Mark X actions have nothing to do with CZ rifles which are made in Czechoslovakia by Ceska zbrojovka Uhersky Brod.
Beautifully built in a Traditional and Classic English Sporting style. The action is fully stamped with MARK X. MANCHESTER ENGLAND as well as ALEXANDRIA VIRGINIA which ties in fully with the history above. All of the metal work is finished in a DEEP LUSTROUS Blue and in excellent condition throughout. The barrel measures up at 23 ½” (597mm), fitted with a fixed rear ‘V’ /open sight at 100 along with two folding for 200 and 300 yards. It also features a fixed, soldered barrel band front sling swivel.
Stock is a Very Dark but RICH and HIGHLY FIGURED with still well defined chequering. The Double Fielded Raised Cheek piece just adds even more class to the 14 ½” (368mm) long stock pull. That includes the ¾” (19mm) Recoil Pad.
Trigger pull is very nice as it is and breaks very cleanly and even time after time, even with the extra wide blade fitted. A fully Jewelled Bolt shaft just finishes this High Class Rifle off.
At a bare weight of 8 ½ Lbs this is quite a substantial rifle but so is the calibre. Suitable for just about anything not classed as dangerous the 7mm Magnum certainly packs some punch. No doubt the reason for the heavier than usual bare weight here. It will certainly help with recoil.
