A RARE OPPORTUNITY to get hands on a 12G Over and Under Browning Lightening Superposed Shotgun.
This link sheds some light for those who do not know about these fine guns. It also dates this particular gun to a late 1960 production. NOT BAD AT ALL given now 60 years old. These guns just get more sought after and collectable as time ticks by.
Barrels are a compact 26 3/8” (670mm) and no doubt help to balance the gun as well as it does. They also retain a good original finish with fixed chokes at approx. ½ and ¾. Chambers are standard ‘game, at 2 ¾” (70mm). Everything topped off with a narrow 5/16” (8mm) Ventilated Game Rib and Single Sight Bead.
Woodwork is in great overall condition with the chequering still clean, even crisp though I would not go to sharp. Semi-Pistol Prince of Wales grip with a pull at 14 3/8” (365mm). The quite Bonny but understated Stock really sets the gun off Very Nicely indeed. A few very minor marks too but nothing much. Remarkable given how long the gun has been about. Grain pattern is not fantastic but there is some and it is ‘quietly’ pleasing. If anything I would say the stock is also ever so slightly cast off for a left handed shot. That close to straight it will likely shoot from either shoulder unless you need a DEFINITE bend one way.
At 6 Lbs 15 ½ oz this is not a heavy gun for an over and under. It will make a great option for ‘walked up’ as well as any other discipline. The action is still reasonably tight though closes without force and was originally finished in light grey. It does look to have been carried about here and as such might benefit from a refinish. That said it would need to be as per original which would likely be all but impossible now. Personally, I would simply leave well alone and just enjoy it as is.
