This came in to me in a not too great condition externally. Prior to considering investing money to refinish I took this out to test fire. In strongly gusting wind I managed a 2-inch group off the shoulder over the open / iron sights at 50 yards. That was with both calibre’s fired on a Seriously Poor day for testing. However, capable of those results meant it was WELL WORTH putting it back into its now Completely Newly Refurbished State.
The .458 Winchester Magnum Barrel measures 23 ¾” (605mm). This with a Fixed Position / Distance Rear Iron Sight as well as a Secondary Flip Up / Down. The 7mm Remington Magnum a straight 24” (610mm). This too with a Single Fixed Distance ‘V’ Sight as well as TWO Additional Flip Up / Down. None are Stamped Up / Marked. However, I would GUESS the .458 will be set for 50 Yards / Meters and then 100. The 7mm most likely 100, 200 and 300 yard / meter zero. Stock Pull comes in at 14 ¼” (363mm) and with the bigger bore brings in an Overall length of 45 ¼” (1148mm). Obviously with the 7mm that adds the extra ¼” (6mm). Again, with the .458 barrel, scales offer up a Bare Weight, as pictured, of 9 Lb ½ oz (4.1 Kg). I did not swap the 7mm out to weigh but given the smaller bore likely slightly heavier.
Both fitted with Traditional Safari Style Soldered Barrel Ring Sling Points. The Rear Swivel as part of the Decorative Colour Case Hardened Pistol Grip Cap. That matching the Bolt Release Catch. A Large Butter Knife Style Bolt Handle. Plenty of Surface Area for a Positive and None Slip Grip. This too Colour Case Finished to Accentuate the Matching Grip Cap and Bolt Release. Just ‘enough’ to add a ‘splash / flurry’ of understated variation. The Bolt fitted with its Original Vertical Flag Safety. Plus, the usual FULL-SIZED Mauser 98 Extractor Claw. SO preferred for a Dangerous Game Rifle.
IF you insist on a scope to ‘spoil’ the challenge and fun then, by all means, do so. However, for what this is REALISTICALLY for, even a 4-inch group at 100 yards is way past good enough. Provided it IS basically actually on target to begin with. The rear action ring still with its original speed loader / charger ridge and recess.
To Swap one barrel for the other it’s a Single Locating / Lock Screw to Wind Out and Back In. Once out it allows whichever Barrel to Unscrew from the Action. Then Simply Screw back in the Second Barrel and re-fit the Locking Screw. Done. Westley Richards (for one) have a Very Similar system though admittedly much more refined. Equally, you DO also PAY for that extra finesse. Your choice as to which you consider fits your pocket best.
The Walnut Stock with some Decent Colour Contrast and a Strong Straight Grain Throughout. Both Barrels Complete with their Own Fitted For-end Woodwork too. Also, Front Bead Hood Protectors still in place.
