GENUINE ‘London Gun’ .308 Calibre Bolt Action Sporting Rifle from E. J. Churchill. The barrel fully detailed as follows:
As usual, when I manage to turn up these EXTREMELY POPULAR as well as MUCH SOUGHT-AFTER Rifles:
For any of the self-professed aficionados still out there please do read on. If you still insist it is not 100% genuine then please just keep your opinions to yourself. Mainly because it’s WRONG.
1/ This is built on an Original Mauser 98 Military Action. It still features the usual ‘thumb cut out’ to the left side. Also, the speed loading ‘gate’ / recess to the rear action ring that accepts original clip loaders.
2/ Look at the rear of the Original Mauser 98 Bolt. Again, not from Birmingham. With the current Side Safety fitted the original Mauser ‘Flag’ Safety has been ground away and re-profiled. Left Bright to match other features yet to be detailed.
3/ With (again) Original German Mauser ‘double screw’ details to the Trigger Guard and Magazine Housing. For those who do not already know: Military Mauser rifles have the two main action screws along with smaller / secondary ‘lock’ screws. They ensure the main screws stay exactly where they should be.
4/ The Magazine, now fitted with a Hinged Floor Plate, held in place by the Bright Finished Lever Release featured. The trigger is also ‘articulated’. As in it feels remarkably lose. However, its works Very Nicely for me. Simply GENTLY take up the slack until resistance is felt. Then it’s nothing more than a smooth pull to a NICE, CRISP and CLEAN sear release.
21 ¾” (553mm) Barrel set to a 14” (355mm) Stock Length / Pull. Together they bring in an overall length of 42 7/8” (1090mm) and tips scales at 7 Lb 11 ½ oz (3.5 Kg) straight.
Hand Cut Chequering is still Very Clean as well as still sharp enough to the touch. There are absolutely zero marks or blemishes to detail anywhere. Wood or metal. I suspect this is also Maple Walnut as opposed to the far more common ‘standard’ options / choices. It features some Excellent Cross Grain Highlights. Especially to the top of the comb. The rest with a more than decent Grain Pattern, Figuring and Colour. It does also feature a Good Strong Straight Grain through the grip area. As such, about the best of both worlds. 1” (25mm) Red Rubber Recoil Pad including the black spacer. All finished off with a Rosewood Pistol Grip Cap with Flush Inlet White dot.
The Action already pre-drilled and tapped to accept bases, mounts and scope if needed. The safety also locking the bolt closed when applied. The Trigger Guard has been ground away to a much nicer, finer, more contoured profile and left ‘bright’. This to match the Trigger and other polished features throughout. Namely the two screw heads to the for-end cross strengthener / recoil bar. Also, the Original Mauser 98 Bolt Release catch. The stock is even fitted with Stainless Steel Sling Swivels’ ALL DELIBERATE in order that things done as features all match up.
At present the rear, original open / ‘V’ Iron sight is missing. I assume from a scope fitting. I MAY have something suitable to simply slide back into the existing dovetail. If not, one can be organized. However, assuming a scope will be the preference for most buyers there is little point. That said, I have quite a few customers now wanting to revert back / learn to shoot with open sights. Generally, just sick and tired. Realizing they are spending fortunes on the latest / greatest, all singing, all dancing, no need to think telescopic sights. They want to go back to a challenge. Learn to re-use the skills they once took for granted etc. It is a lot more common and popular than many would imagine.
