LEE ENFIELD .303 BOLT ACTION MILITARY SERVICE RIFLE.
A Sensible example of a WWI SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) .303 Bolt Action Military Service Rifle. NO DOUBT it also played its part through WWII as well. This dates to 1916 production, as stamped on the Action Band. Along with the usual Crown, Enfield and SHT LE III. Original serial number is stamped in and detailed as Q 9790. However, the rifle does have secondary number details to several areas. The Left side of the action, the Action Band along with the Front Action Ring.
NO IDEA quite why or by who. ANYONE with ACCURATE information please do drop a message and update me. It seems to make little sense. Especially when the barrel already has its matching and original S/N detail below the rear top guard. Makes NO GOOD sense (to me) but not a great deal does these days anyway.
NO DOUBT some die hard enthusiast WILL have a perfectly good explanation. I will be waiting.
Anyway, back to the rifle:
25 1/4″ (640mm) Barrel set to a Trigger Pull length of 13 1/2″ (343mm). Overall, the rifle measures to 44 1/2″ (1130mm) to the front of the Bayonet Lug. Weighing in at a straight 9 Lb (4.086 Kg).
As with SO MANY of these older Service Rifles the Bolt also has its own number too. However, it IS with the correct for age / model ‘rear end’ re-cocking pull. That said the numbers on that are also slightly different too!
As said, it IS a common enough feature on these rifles. If you want all matching right through, then obviously, this one is not for you. However, for others this is all part of the rifles Rich and Varied History. Things got lost, replaced, swapped over, robbed. In the middle of a battlefield ALL you want is a rifle that works. A few matching numbers is of minimal concern.
Only other comment to make is that this feels VERY Authentic. I can imagine it certainly did go through its more than fair share of action through BOTH World Wars. Probably beyond that too in some location within the Empire.
