GAMBA 12G SIDE BY SIDE BOXLOCK NONE EJECTOR SHOTGUN
Italian made (and apparently far from inexpensive) 12g Gamba Boxlock None Ejector Side by Side shotgun. This could well have been what is classed as a ‘Pigeon Gun’ given the High Specification and 2 ¾” (70mm) chambers. (Standard side by side ‘game’ guns of the period were normally on 2 ½”). The stock is a long 15 ½” so will suit anyone tall or long armed and is quite pretty. A Light coloured, but well contrasting, straight grained, figured Walnut it was apparently extended (VERY nicely) by a guitar maker. (If you are ‘out there’ please get in touch as I have some work for you)!
Barrels come in at 720mm exactly so an unusual (for the UK) 28 5/16”. Both barrels have tight Full chokes so will make a pretty lethal tool on longer range targets or anything that takes a bit of ‘knocking down’ like pigeons and crows or duck etc.
OK a none ejector but, as with all of the guns like this I sell I will ask the same question: When was the last time you went out shooting with an ejector and did not put your hand over the back of the barrels to stop the spent cases flying away as you broke the gun?
Ejectors are great for ‘big days’ on formal shoots with lots of birds coming over and teams of people tidying up as you go on to the next stand / drive. For the average fella doing a bit of walked up, rough or pigeon shooting from a hide / roost etc. To ME they are a nuisance. Bending down, scratching around through ground cover or trying to pick a hawthorn bush clean after a good day in a hide I do not consider fun.
Never mind…back to the gun! The Scalloped back action is very nicely hand engraved with Rose heads and Flower Bouquets as well as having the Clipped face (a feature generally found on more expensive/ high end guns purely because of the skill and time it takes to make the actions and then fit the barrels to them). It also features an extremely strong triple bite lock up which includes the cross action bolt.
