Description

CHARLES HELLIS 12G SIDE BY SIDE SUPER LIGHT WEIGHT 2” SHOTGUN.

This is the RARE ‘Super Lightweight’ 12g Side by Side Shotgun from Charles Hellis with 2” (50mm) chambers. Guns like this were always few and far between when they were being made. Today they are the proverbial ‘hens teeth’! 26 1/8” (663mm) fixed choke barrels which are currently 1/4 and Full restrictions.

The tapering concave rib is fully signed with the makers name as follows. CHARLES HELLIS LTD. 121 – 123 EDGEWARE ROAD, PICCADILLY, LONDON. Barrels are also specifically stamped for 7/8 oz maximum load too.

The gun weighs in at its ‘Super Light Weight’ of only 5 Lbs 9 ½ oz (2.537 Kg) so lives up to its name. Overall length is the same as any other similar side by side at 42 3/8” (1076mm).

The well figured and highly patterned stock may well have started off at an equally ‘light weight’ 12 13/16” (328mm). (Plus whatever original pad or finish). It IS built as a very light, easy gun to carry and use. As such this could may well have been made for a youngster, female or just someone of a small stature. At some point it HAS happened and at some point it has also been extended to finish as it is. There is a half inch (12mm) Walnut extension in addition to the inch (25mm) Red rubber recoil pad. As such the pull is currently at 14 3/8” (365mm).

THIS IS  A NONE EJECTOR.

It is difficult to judge if the action was always a bright finish. The Snap on Forend does have some colour to the underside of the iron but looks blued only. As far as ejectors go to me they are generally a waste of time. WHY everyone thinks they want or needs one confuses me. Shooting clays the vast majority of people call pull. They mount the gun. They take their shots. THEN they put their hand over the action as it breaks to stop the ejectors ejecting the spent cases! Pull the cases out and drop them into a bin or pocket.

Sat in a hide? Generally you set a hide up with a good background of a nice thick Holly or Hawthorne bush. Have a ‘red letter’ day and go through several boxes of cartridges. Get your 100 plus birds. FANTASTIC! A GREAT DAY! WELL DONE YOU! Then spend the next two hours trying to pick your cartridge cases that have been ejecting so beautifully straight into that thick SPIKEY bush that hid you so well. Go home looking like you went three 10 minute rounds with two wildcats in a cloth sack. A day on a driven shoot. Are you lucky enough to have that many birds coming over AND someone to gather up your mess after each drive? If so then an ejector MIGHT be justified. Even on walked up they are nothing more than a distraction!
